A double-header weekend saw tired legs heading to a “home away from home” game at Monkton Prep School. The surface was new for both sides and proved challenging for some. Bunday struggled to find his feet in the warm-up, opting to spend most of it on his back instead. But by push-back, both teams were raring to go and started strong. Buccs – determined after a disappointing loss the day before – began with high intensity and maintained it throughout the first half. However, the visitors put up a firm resistance, resulting in a frustrating first half. Some fantastic hockey from the home side led to numerous tantalising chances, but despite being on top throughout the first half Bath couldn’t break the deadlock through missed chances and some vital saves by the Westbury keeper. A momentary lapse in concentration left a man free in a dangerous position at the top of the Buccs circle, and a goal-line save from Man of the Match, Kevin McCafferty was all that kept the halftime score line to 0-0.
After the break, Bath maintained their impressive work-rate, and as the travelling side began to tire, they began to make more mistakes. More missed opportunities and a handful of lack-lustre short corners continued the frustration until a foot on the line resulted in a penalty flick being awarded to the home team, presenting the best chance yet. Rowe stepped up to take it, picked his spot and executed it perfectly, smashing the keepers left glove with pinpoint accuracy! Alas the chance went begging, but the disappointment was short lived. The breakthrough came shortly after from an excellent team goal, coolly swept home by “forward-at-heart” Grounds. Confidence restored, Bath played some superb, flowing hockey, and soon began to dominate in the midfield. The game was put to bed when White broke free of the defence with blistering pace on the counter-attack and expertly lifting the ball over the sliding keeper and into the goal.
Final Score 2-0 to Buccs, MOM – Kevin McCafferty for being a hero in the goal mouth, DOD – Sam Bunday for being a turtle in the warm-up.
