TBB U14B v Cheltenham 1230 11.12.16: result 3-12 loss

Buccaneers U14 boys B gathered at UWE for what was expected to be their toughest game of the season in the Avon League, Cheltenham.  It was a beautiful day for hockey and CHC quickly moved the ball around the pitch from their push back and threatened the Buccs D.  Unperturbed Buccs quickly countered, releasing their striker thought the inside right channel to whistle a shot past the left post, almost 1-0 & only a minute gone!  Tash was rock solid & began to pull off a string of great saves as CHC began to press hard & eventually ground out the opening goal.  They began to press again but the Buccs backline of Sam, Tom, Max, Sam and Oscar held firm, Dany, Louis, Freddie and Ben played neat hockey in midfield and Fedi & Max stretched the opposition wings.  After 8 minutes a neat pass & dummy released John into the left of the opposition D & he slotted home under the diving, onrushing keeper…. CHC were rocked but dug in & started to score a few goals.

With 20 minutes gone the CHC centre midfielder took a nasty blow to the head, he did walk off the pitch & was whisked away to Southmead hospital.  We wish him well.

At half time it was lots to 1 in favour of CHC, but playing the national champions is about learning & we were.  The discussion focused on using the wings to get the ball out of defence & keeping it simple, there was a good consensus.

The 2nd half started as the first had ended, but after 14 minutes a neat right to left through ball put Louis into the opposition D, where a flick was won & duly despatched into the left side netting.  6 minutes later Buccs won another short corner & after a slight sideways shuffle this was hit from the top of the D into the bottom left hand corner.  The game ended with a lots to 3 loss, but the boys had played some good hockey, as demonstrated by scoring against top quality opposition, and they and their supporters had enjoyed themselves in the sun.

TBB goals, John Lowrie (3): 8 minutes open play; 39 minutes penalty flick; & 45 minutes short corner.

Lady player of the match:  Tash

Outfield/male player of the match: John, for 3 goals, hotly pursued by Freddy!

Quote of the match "it's a bit hard to play against some of their forwards, two of them are bigger than most Dad's"

Thank you to our stand-in goalkeeper & to all the parents, the coach & umpire for their support and commitment, greatly appreciated.
