A much improved scoreline compared with the 1-4 result away pre-Christmas was as a result of tighter defending, including by the excellent Peter Auzins in goal and chances taken up front. The first half started slowly, rather unusually for the Mariners, and Bassett managed a two goal advantage by half time. However the team spirit and effort that Mariners have shown all season paid dividends by clawing back the two goals and departing with a point, which was unexpected, given the relative positions of the two teams in the league. Two green cards resulted in Mariners being down to 9 players at one point, through some enthusiastic tackling, and the team had to dig deep into their reserves of fitness and guile to ensure the defence was not breached, despite a long period of pressure from Bassett. This result gives the team confidence that they can achieve against higher league opposition for the remainder of the season, and if continued should result in a solid mid-table position.
