On Saturday 11th March the Mighty D's came up against the resurgent force of South Gloucester. Chasing promotion, the D's opened the first half with some fervent ambition, albeit a little disjointed at times. In a Tale as Old as Time, Buccs let in a couple leaks in the midfield in the first half, and after some dazzling work from their forwards, South Gloucester opened up their account. Buccs turned up the gas & managed to enter the oppo's D a few times in the latter part of the opening half. Eventual DOD Calen getting Tangled up in his Sultan of Agribar Pants and fluffing a sitter passed into the D after some good build up. Nonetheless a couple of short corners soon followed. After the first shorty got a little too overcomplicated. Buccs reverted back to the bare necessities for the 2nd shorty later on, and Warwick finished off a good move to level the scores.
From there on out it was a massive attritional battle, with both sides having numerous chances. Perhaps it was the heat that made it feel like an Arabian night, or an Arabian day..but both sides copped green cards at various stages for indiscipline, and after a period of discontent & frustration, Skipper Nick settled the players, who Let It Go & just got on with the game. Buccs held tight, and It was as if Newman had flicked his wand and turned the match ball into a pumpkin, making numerous vital saves look all too easy. It was also the Solid defence from Clarke, Pellow, Henly, Sandey & Barry, who kept our Circle of Life in the promotion sphere going towards the end, and inspired the rest of the team to dig deep & keep South Gloucester out for the last 5 minutes...even managing to hold out two short corners once the final whistle has blown.
It's heigh-ho to Minehead to dig-dig-dig our promotion next week, after that it should be Hakuna Matata!
DOD, me - thanks for lending me your XL spare pair of shorts Marty.
Man of the Match: Adam 'Fairy Godmother' Newman, for saving our skin on numerous occasions and making sure we still have a great chance to get to (promotion) ball.
