Sabres unlucky to lose in 12 goal thriller!
Despite Chris Wiseman scoring first ever hat trick, Matt Zander netting his first goal for the club and leading scorer Nick Middleton getting his 13th goal of the season from a penalty stroke, Lady Luck once again conspired against the lads today in their game against Plymouth University at the Lipton Academy facilty.
Only 10 outfield players were available to make the long trip down the M5 against their opponents who were pretty much at full strength. The Sabres started well and within 3 mins had taken the lead with a neat deflection by Wiseman from Middleton's initial drag flick. Plymouth equalised a few minutes later from a well taken goal into the roof of the net that surprised our keeper while minutes later we missed a great opportunity to take the lead again.
The game was played at a furiously fast pace from end to end and by half time Plymouth had extended their lead to 4-2 only for the Sabres to score three goals in a pulsating start to the second half from Wiseman, Zander and Wiseman (another deflection from a Middleton drag flick) to find themselves leading 5-4.
That all important sixth goal wasn't forthcoming despite a number of excellent opportunities and, as the speed of the game started to take its toll, Plymouth capitalised on some slack defensive work to equalise, then take the lead and, to add insult to injury, extend it before the final whistle blew.
For the neutral it was a cracking match. For the Sabres it meant their slim chance to remain in the Championship has ended after one season. Still there's the Somerset County Cup final to look forward to on Apr 02.
