Buccaneers Beat Bassett
TBBHC C team took the points in a pulsating game at the Sitec Arena against a spirited Wootton Bassett team.
For once getting into the game quickly, Buccaneers largely dominated the first half creating repeated chances which they just couldnt put away, with James Lawton Smith at right midfield and Andy Church at left being regularly in the action. Wootton Bassett were threatening on the break, however, and occasionally tested an improvised back 4 with their pace, with some great recoveries keeping the opposition largely out of the D. 0-0 at half time and it was Buccaneers who were the more disappointed.
Coach Ackland called for more ruthlessness and got it within seconds of the re-start with a superb goal worked neatly up the pitch before a deft pass from Alex Grounds to the far post where Lewis Harvey popped up for his usual 2 yard finish. It felt like this was cue for Buccs to build on the lead but some loose defending let Bassett pull the defence out of position and score a good goal themselves. It was good to see that this did not stop the attacking intent of the home team, who kept on threatening the opposition goal and won several short corners with James Lewis repeatedly trying to see if the goalkeeper's pads would stop a ball or not. Finally, from one of the many rebounds from those pads, Dan Henly put the goal away.
Wootton Bassett were not done however and a torrid period followed for the Cs as they were pressed into their own half and down to 10 men when Henly received a yellow card. Some great saves from Ciaran Newman kept the lead in tact as did a memorable reverse stick tackle by man of the match Sam Bunday on the opposition's best player as he was winding up to shoot. Now under sustained pressure, the Cs changed their formation to bottle up the midfield which confused Andrew Church and Heber but helped to wrestle back some possesson and see the game out. A last second short corner had the Wootton Bassett supporters chearing and the Buccaneers crew with their hearts in their mouths, but after some serious ping pong, Alex Grounds launched the ball out of the D and the 3 points were secure.
The win stretches the Cs 2nd place position 10 points beyond the 3rd place team. Next weekend its a double header versus Firebrands and Westbury.
