We always knew it was going to be a hard encounter because, apart from being the largest hockey club in the country, Surbiton also have a very good youth system and, once we saw their team sheet, we knew they had come to take the game very seriously. Their Team Manager told me it was the strongest U18 team he had put out this season after the scare of nearly losing the previous Cup game to Canterbury, eventually winning only on penalty flicks.
They were good, I think we can all agree with that, and they have quality players in key areas that can win a game for them - Evan Kimber and Eddie Way being two prime examples - but we performed well ourselves particularly in the 2nd half when, despite being 0-3 down, we kept at them and didn't implode which is testiment to our strength of character as a squad.
Our Cup run is over for another season but in reality you always want to play the big teams and that only happens in the later stages of any tournament. Last year we played Cannock and Beeston in the semi-finals but I think we'd all agree that playing Surbiton yesterday was an experience we can all learn from. Wouldn't be surprised if they go on and win it now and I don't think we'd begrudge them that.
